Mummification - Ancient Egypt
When important people like Pharaohs died, people would wrap them up in cloth. This was part of the preparation for the afterlife. They were placed in their tomb/pyramid and left to rest. These figures wrapped up in cloth were known as mummies. On this page are step by step instructions to help you prepare your very own mummy.
Step 1Get a dead Pharaoh.
Step 2Place it in a beautiful house that smells nice.
Step 3Undress the body and place it on a table. This will be the embalming table.
Step 4Remove the brain by placing a chisel up the left nostril and breaking through into the skull.
Step 5Fill the empty skull with plaster.
Step 6Cut open the front, take out the whole contents of the stomach, clean it with palm wine. Then, fill the hole with spices and sprinkle the body with salt. Sew up the opening, leave it for just more then a month, then wash it from head to foot and wrap it with 375 sqm of linen cloth!
Step 7If you want, you can right charms and prayers on paper and wrap it in the bandages or write it on the bandages itself. These charms and prayers were said to prepare them for the afterlife and protect them from bad spirits.
Step 8If you want, you can replace the eyes with black stones or onions if you want (King Ramesses IV was discovered with 2 onions in his eyes!)
Step 9Stuff the body with linen rags so that only the heart is left.
Step 10Make a gold mask for the head.
Step 11Put the mummy in a coffin.
Step 12Put the stomach, liver and intestines in canopic jars.
Step 13Open the mummy's mouth so that it can eat, drink, talk and breathe in the afterlife.
Step 14Fasten down the coffin lid and place the mummy in a tomb/pyramid and seal the tomb. Remember to fill the tomb with many valuable treasures, even a mummified cat!
Step 15Sing a funeral song for the mummy.
Step 16Have a funeral party with the best wines, food, entertainers and musicians. Everyone is invited - except the mummy!!!
